Interview Recipes

Tell me about a target you set for yourself that nobody asked you to hit. How did you hold yourself to it when no one was checking?

Initiative

Why this works

Assigned goals measure compliance; self-set ones measure drive. Moving the question from the achievement to the mechanism — tracking, checkpoints, what happened in the slack weeks — asks for material a rehearsed success story doesn't contain.

Follow-up probes

  • Why that target, and why that size?
  • What did you do the week it slipped?
  • Who else knew about it, and why them?

What good looks like

A target with a reason behind it, a concrete tracking habit, a wobble handled with an adjustment rather than quiet abandonment, and a standard that outlived the goal itself.

Red flags

An assigned quota relabeled as personal ambition, a suspiciously frictionless march to the number, or a target that seems to have been discovered after the fact for interview purposes.
