Describe a calculated bet you made on a piece of work that didn't pay off. What did you weigh beforehand, and who knew you were taking it?

Why this works

Risk stories that end well can't be told apart from luck; the failed bet exposes actual decision quality — what was weighed, what was capped, who was told. How someone loses a bet predicts how they'll size the next one.

Follow-up probes

  • What was the worst case you had accepted in advance?
  • What did you do the moment it turned?
  • Would you change the bet or the size, looking back?

What good looks like

Stakes and odds named before the fact, exposure deliberately capped, sponsors informed rather than surprised, and a specific change to how they size bets since.

Red flags

Recklessness relabeled as boldness, a bet nobody knew about until it failed, the loss pinned wholly on circumstances, or the takeaway is to never risk anything again.
