Tell me about a time you had to get a decision from someone who didn't share your expertise. How did you make your case?

Cross-audience communication failures are a common root cause of stalled projects. Anchoring on a real decision (not "explain X to me now") reveals whether the candidate adapts framing to what the decider actually cares about.

• What did you leave out of your explanation, and why?
• What questions did they ask that surprised you?
• Did they decide the way you hoped? What moved them?

The candidate translated stakes into the listener's terms, checked for understanding rather than assuming it, and can say what they deliberately simplified without misleading.

Condescension toward the non-expert, equating "communicated" with "sent the document", or no adaptation between audiences.
