Tell me about a time someone doubted your honesty or questioned your word. How did you respond?
Why this works
Being doubted is where integrity gets audited from the outside, and the response can't be borrowed — defensiveness, evidence, and repair all look different in the retelling. It also reveals whether the candidate got curious about what gave the doubt a foothold, the part indignation skips.
Follow-up probes
- What gave the doubt a foothold — was any part of it fair?
- What did you offer beyond asking to be believed?
- Where did the relationship land afterward?
- What do you do now so your word is easier to verify?
What good looks like
They treated the doubt as information rather than insult, produced something checkable — records, witnesses, a track record — owned whatever foothold was real, and can describe the aftermath honestly, including a repair that only partly worked.
Red flags
The entire answer is indignation, the doubter is dismissed as paranoid or political, no curiosity ever surfaced about why trust wavered, or the resolution amounts to being believed because they insisted louder.
